CARACAS, Venezuela: Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, recognized as the world’s oldest living man by Guinness World Records, has died at the age of 114, just weeks before his 115th birthday.

Mr. Pérez Mora’s reign as the oldest man was brief. Guinness World Records officially awarded him the title in February 2022, following the passing of Saturnino de la Fuente García. At the time, Mr. Pérez Mora was 112 years and 253 days old. He was confirmed as the fourth-oldest validated living person globally and reportedly the only man alive born before 1911.

Mr. Pérez Mora attributed his exceptional longevity to a disciplined lifestyle. He emphasized the importance of hard work, balanced with proper rest and an early bedtime. He also included a daily intake of aguardiente, a local alcoholic beverage, in his routine. Devotion to his faith played a significant role as well. Mr. Pérez Mora described himself as a devout man who found solace in prayer. He expressed a desire to be remembered as a diligent worker, a devoted husband, and a faithful follower of his religion.

Born on May 27, 1909, in Venezuela to Euquitio Pérez and Edelmira Mora, Mr. Pérez Mora resided in Táchira state until his passing. Freddy Bernal, the Governor of Táchira, mourned his loss, describing Mr. Pérez Mora as a role model for the Tachirense community – known for their humility, dedication to hard work, and strong family values.

Mr. Pérez Mora was married to Ediofina del Rosario García for six decades. He leaves behind a large and extended family, including 11 children, 42 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. His life journey began in agriculture at the tender age of five. Despite limited formal education, Mr. Pérez Mora learned to read and write. He later served as a sheriff in Caricuena, where he played a vital role in mediating land and family disputes for a decade.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro expressed his condolences on social media, honoring Mr. Pérez Mora’s remarkable life and offering his sympathies to the family and the people of El Cobre, Táchira state.

The world mourns the passing of Mr. Pérez Mora. The Gerontology Research Group is actively searching for his successor as the world’s oldest living man. Japanese citizen Gisaburō Sonobe and Brazilian resident Josias de Oliveira are potential contenders, though confirmation of their birthdates is pending.
