Sharing on the Go, Without Data

Codenamed “People nearby,” this feature allows users to share photos, videos, and other files directly with nearby contacts without needing an internet connection. This could be a game-changer for situations where Wi-Fi or cellular data is unavailable, like at festivals, concerts, or even in areas with limited internet access.

Security and Simplicity

Details on how WhatsApp will achieve this feat are still under wraps. However, experts speculate it might leverage Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, similar to features on other platforms. The feature is also expected to prioritize security with end-to-end encryption for all transferred files.

Benefits and Availability

This offline file sharing could significantly reduce data usage for users who frequently share large media files. It could also bridge the gap between iPhone and Android users, who often face challenges sharing files directly.

While there’s no official release date yet, WhatsApp is currently gathering feedback from beta testers on Android v2.24.9.22. This feedback will likely be used to refine the user interface and address any bugs before a public rollout.

Meta AI Chatbot in Testing

In a related development, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is also testing a Meta AI chatbot on both WhatsApp and Instagram in India. However, access is currently limited to users with beta versions of the apps.
