Lyrid Meteor Shower Peak (April 21st-22nd):

  • Renowned for their luminous trails and swift velocities, the Lyrid meteors are predicted to reach a peak viewing window between the evenings of April 21st and 22nd. During this period, astronomy experts anticipate ideal observation conditions could allow for up to 20 meteors to be visible per hour.
  • The presence of a bright moon (exceeding 95% illumination) may cause a slight reduction in overall meteor visibility. However, the inherent brilliance of the Lyrids is likely to ensure a captivating celestial display, with the potential for awe-inspiring “shooting stars” streaking across the night sky.
  • To maximize viewing potential, the Al-Ajiri Scientific Center recommends venturing to a dark location and commencing observations after midnight.

The Arrival of the Pink Moon (April 23rd):

  • Following the tail end of the Lyrid meteor shower, the night sky will welcome the arrival of a full moon on April 23rd.
  • This specific full moon has garnered the moniker “Pink Moon” within certain cultures. The designation traditionally stems from its association with the springtime blooming of wild pink phlox flowers prevalent in North American regions.

Public Observation Opportunities:

The Al-Ajiri Scientific Center has taken the initiative to organize a dedicated observation expedition. This event will involve the participation of both Center volunteers and astronomy enthusiasts. Also the primary objective of monitoring both the Lyrid meteor shower and the Pink Moon.

This unique convergence of celestial phenomena presents a remarkable opportunity for the public to engage with the wonders of astronomy and witness firsthand some of the most captivating sights our universe has to offer.
