Following a Ramadan Ghabga event hosted by the Kuwaiti Dermatologists Association, Dr. Al-Lafi, who also leads the association, spoke to reporters. She revealed that dry skin, allergies, and eczema are the most prevalent skin conditions in Kuwait. Dr. Al-Lafi emphasized the ministry’s commitment to improving dermatological services and keeping pace with advancements in developed nations.

Interestingly, Dr. Al-Lafi noted the potential benefits of fasting for certain skin conditions, particularly those related to allergies. She explained that fasting can temporarily reduce blood and skin water content, subsequently boosting the immune system’s resistance to microbes, infections, and bacterial diseases. Additionally, fasting may lessen the severity of psoriasis and allergies, which can worsen with frequent consumption of rich, salty foods and sugary treats, which can exacerbate acne.

However, Dr. Al-Lafi cautioned that while fasting offers numerous health advantages, individuals with severe lupus, psoriasis, skin cancer, and other serious skin conditions should avoid it. These conditions necessitate specific nutritional components that might be compromised by abstaining from food and water.

Dr. Al-Lafi recommended incorporating green salads and lean protein into Suhoor and Iftar meals to maintain healthy skin and hair during Ramadan. These dietary changes impact the body’s levels of essential vitamins like A and D. She also highlighted the significance of consuming ample fresh vegetables and water to replenish fluids lost during fasting, while limiting foods high in salt and spices.
