Kuwait Tightens Traffic Laws to Enhance Road Safety

Kuwait City, Kuwait: The Kuwaiti government is taking a significant step towards improving road safety by proposing stricter penalties for traffic violations. These amendments to the Traffic Law, currently under review by the Ministry of Interior, aim to deter reckless driving behaviors and foster a culture of responsible road use.

Key highlights of the proposed changes include:

  • Stronger Deterrence for DUI: Offenders face imprisonment for up to three years or a hefty fine. The fine ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 Kuwaiti dinars (KD) for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Combatting Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit could result in a maximum sentence of three months in jail or a KD 500 fine.
  • Distracted Driving Penalties: Using a mobile phone while driving will be punishable by a three-month prison term or a KD 300 fine.
  • Red Light Violations: Disregarding traffic signals will come with a potential three-month imprisonment or a fine of up to KD 500.
  • Window Tint Regulations: Tinted windows exceeding legal limits could lead to a maximum two-month jail sentence or a KD 200 fine.
  • Enhanced Child Safety Measures: Leaving children or pets unattended in a car or allowing them to protrude from windows will incur a KD 75 fine. Additionally, a KD 100-200 fine awaits those who transport children under 10 in the front seat or fail to use a child seat in the back.
  • Ensuring Emergency Response Efficiency: Obstructing emergency vehicles like fire trucks, and ambulances. Also police cars will be penalized with a fine ranging from KD 250 to KD 500.

The implementation of these stricter penalties is expected to significantly contribute to a safer driving environment in Kuwait.
