Mountain View, CA: Google is making it easier for users to choose sustainable travel options. The tech giant announced today that Google Maps will prioritize displaying pedestrian paths and new railway lines alongside driving routes and flights. This update aims to promote cleaner and less polluting transportation choices.

“We’ve launched a new feature in Google Maps that showcases public transportation options and walking paths alongside driving routes,” Google stated. “This will be available for users considering routes where walking or public transportation is a viable and practical alternative to driving.”

The update will initially be rolled out in 15 major cities including Amsterdam, Barcelona, and London. Additionally, Google Flights will now display train trip information alongside flight options. This builds upon a 2023 integration where Google Search began displaying train alternatives for specific flight searches.

This announcement comes amidst a growing trend towards sustainable travel solutions. Earlier this year, the Spanish government proposed a ban on short-haul flights with viable train alternatives. Similarly, France implemented a ban in 2023 on flights connecting cities reachable by train within two and a half hours.

Google’s update empowers users to make eco-conscious travel decisions and supports the global shift towards cleaner transportation options.
