Beware Fake Bank Calls! Expat Victim of Clever Phishing Attack

Kuwait: A recent incident in Kuwait serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals and the importance of cybersecurity awareness. An expatriate resident in Kuwait fell victim to a phishing scam, resulting in the complete depletion of their bank account balance.

The victim received a phone call from an individual posing as a bank employee. The perpetrator instructed the victim to click a link and pay a nominal fee (KD1) to activate their bank account. The victim reportedly did not share any one-time passwords (OTP) with the caller. But their account was swiftly emptied within minutes. Security sources suspect the victim’s phone may have been compromised. Potentially allowing the scammers to intercept the OTP and gain unauthorized access.

This incident underscores the critical need for vigilance when dealing with online requests, particularly those concerning financial information.

  • Exercise caution with unsolicited links and attachments: Refrain from clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown senders.
  • Banks will not request sensitive information via phone or email: Legitimate financial institutions will never ask for personal details. Also never ask account information through phone calls or email communications.
