In a press release, Apple emphasized that all used parts will undergo a rigorous calibration process upon installation, ensuring they deliver the same level of functionality and security as brand new components.

“Over the past two years, our engineering teams have been actively innovating in product design and manufacturing to facilitate repairs utilizing pre-owned parts,” stated Apple Inc. “This initiative is a significant step forward in ensuring user privacy and security while minimizing environmental impact.”

The company has also made significant progress in the reuse of biometric sensors critical for Face ID and Touch ID functionality.

Apple assures users that the calibration process for both new and pre-owned genuine parts will occur directly on the device after installation.

Furthermore, to combat the issue of stolen phone disassembly for parts sales, Apple plans to extend its Activation Lock feature to encompass individual iPhone parts. Additionally, users will have access to a comprehensive Parts and Service History, which will now explicitly indicate whether a replaced part is new or pre-owned.

Apple highlighted its ongoing commitment to expanding repair accessibility. Over the past five years, the company has nearly doubled the number of authorized service providers with access to genuine parts, tools, and training. This network now encompasses over 10,000 Independent Repair Providers and Apple Authorized Service Providers globally.
