The DMA seeks to promote fair competition within the digital market. Previously, transferring data between iOS and Android ecosystems presented a complex hurdle for many users. Apple’s new solution, expected to be available by the third quarter of 2025, will address this by offering a user-friendly data transfer method.

“We are developing a solution that assists developers of mobile operating systems in creating more efficient user experiences for data transfer between iPhones and non-iPhone devices,” stated Apple in an official press release.

The impact of this change extends beyond just phone switching. Apple is also working on a system to facilitate the transfer of data between different web browsers on the same device. This functionality, anticipated to be available by the end of 2024 or early 2025, could potentially ease the transition for users who prefer browsers like Chrome over Apple’s Safari.

The DMA represents a broader initiative by the EU to create a more balanced landscape within the tech industry. The law requires large technology companies to ensure fair competition among various apps and services offered on their platforms. This includes preventing preferential treatment for their own products.
