AI Study Reveals Socioeconomic Disparity in Food Choices Across Britain

Cambridge, UK : The University of Cambridge study has utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the healthfulness of food options available through Britain’s Just Eat food delivery platform. The analysis of over 55,000 restaurants, cafes, and fast-food outlets revealed a statistically significant correlation between an establishment’s category and the healthfulness of its menu. Restaurants offered the healthiest choices on average, followed by cafes, with fast-food outlets providing the least healthy options.

Furthermore, the study identified a troubling geographical disparity. Local authorities with higher socioeconomic status such as the City of London and Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster, exhibited a greater concentration of establishments with healthy menus. While deprived areas areas like North East Lincolnshire, Luton, and Kingston upon Hull had a higher prevalence of outlets offering less healthy choices. This “double burden” on residents of deprived neighborhoods, where access to healthy food options is limited and income levels are lower, could potentially exacerbate public health issues like obesity. The study’s findings suggest a need for policymakers and public health officials to explore targeted interventions to improve access to healthy food options in Britain’s deprived areas.
