WhatsApp is bringing a much-anticipated feature to Android users: voice message transcription. Spotted in the latest beta version, this functionality will allow users to convert received voice messages into text. To enable transcription, users will need to download an additional 150MB of app data. Once activated, users can expect to see a text transcript alongside any voice message, eliminating the need to listen to the audio itself.

This new feature boasts several benefits. It enhances accessibility for users with hearing impairments or those who prefer text-based communication. Additionally, it allows users to conveniently read messages in noisy environments where listening to audio might not be an option. Lengthy voice notes can also be easily reviewed in text format, providing a helpful backup.

Privacy remains a priority for WhatsApp. The company has confirmed that the transcription process will happen locally on the user’s device, utilizing the device’s own speech recognition capabilities. This ensures that voice messages are never transmitted to the cloud and that any generated transcripts are encrypted.

While an official release date hasn’t been announced, the presence of this feature in the beta suggests it’s nearing availability for Android users. This functionality mirrors a similar feature recently introduced for WhatsApp’s iOS app, bringing parity to the user experience across both platforms.
