Used Tires to Fuel Kuwait’s Industry: Expats in Green Jobs Boom Expected
Kuwait City: Kuwaiti government agencies are exploring the utilization of discarded tires as an alternative fuel source for industrial applications. This initiative aims to address two pressing issues: reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels and mitigating the environmental impact of used tire waste.

The proposed strategy involves processing used tires into a fuel source suitable for industrial furnaces, potentially replacing coal and oil. A phased approach is envisioned, with factories initially incorporating a 40% blend of tire-derived fuel, transitioning to 100% usage within five years. Given the estimated volume of used tires in Kuwait exceeding 9.5 million, this approach offers significant potential for sustainable fuel generation.
The plan acknowledges logistical considerations, including dedicated storage facilities and the energy requirements for tire processing. Successful tire-shredding programs implemented in countries like Germany serve as a model for Kuwait, where similar initiatives commenced in 2019.
However, the challenge of managing existing stockpiles of used tires remains. The Environment Public Authority emphasizes the urgency of addressing this issue due to its detrimental environmental impact. Recommendations include expedited removal of accumulated tires and exploring broader industrial applications for the processed fuel.
Effective tire management requires collaboration between the municipality and relevant authorities. Establishing clear legal frameworks regarding ownership and disposal responsibilities is seen as a critical step.
