Shuaiba North Plant Adds 860 Megawatts to National Grid After Successful Maintenance

In a significant boost to Kuwait’s power generation capabilities, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has successfully restored 860 megawatts of production capacity by bringing the Shuaiba North Power Plant back into service. This comes after the completion of critical maintenance on the plant’s power units and water distillers, which also resumed producing 45 million imperial gallons of water.

According to informed sources speaking to Al-Rai, the revival of the Shuaiba North units and water distillation systems was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Ministry’s engineering team and a leading international company that resolved the long-standing technical issues.

The ministry’s efforts were closely overseen by Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, who remains committed to executing the maintenance schedule of all power and water production units with precision. The program is being carefully monitored by Undersecretary Dr. Adel Al-Zamel and Assistant Undersecretary for the Power Plants Sector, Engineer Haitham Al-Ali.

Recent drops in maximum temperatures have contributed to a noticeable decline in electricity consumption, with the load index staying below 10,000 megawatts for the past three days. Taking advantage of this window, the ministry is accelerating maintenance efforts on additional units to prepare for the inevitable rise in summer demand.

A ministry spokesperson highlighted the importance of national cooperation, praising the institutions that have shown dedication to conserving electricity and water. “Rationalization is no longer optional; it’s essential to ensuring the stability of the country’s energy supply during the high-demand summer months,” she added.
