Kuwaiti Onion Harvest Mitigates Anticipated Price Surge During Ramadan

Kuwait: The Kuwaiti Ministry of Agriculture can report a successful outcome in managing the recent global spike in onion prices. The introduction of locally grown onions to the market has effectively stabilized prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, a period typically marked by increased demand for the vegetable.

Prior to the arrival of the Kuwaiti harvest, international market fluctuations had caused significant price increases for onions, impacting both households and restaurants. However, the influx of local produce approximately ten days ago has reversed the trend.

“The introduction of Kuwaiti onions has demonstrably stabilized the market,” stated Faisal Al-Zoubi, a prominent Kuwaiti farmer. “Consumers are now benefiting from fair prices, with a carton of onions costing around 1.5 Kuwaiti dinars, a significant decrease from the previous highs.” Al-Zoubi further emphasized the importance of establishing regulated minimum prices to ensure the long-term sustainability of the domestic onion industry.

Abdullah Al-Thwaimer, another Kuwaiti farmer, echoed Al-Zoubi’s sentiments, expressing cautious optimism about the continued decline in prices with a consistent supply from local farms.

Market vendors have also confirmed the positive impact. Shakir Fadlallah, a seller in the Shubra Al-Khadar area, reported a substantial decrease in onion prices following the arrival of the Kuwaiti harvest. “Prices have returned to normal levels, ensuring market stability for the upcoming holy month,” Fadlallah said.

This development stands in contrast to the ongoing global market volatility, exemplified by the Indian government’s indefinite extension of its ban on onion exports. The success of the Kuwaiti onion harvest underscores the importance of a robust domestic agricultural sector in mitigating the impact of external factors and ensuring food security during periods of heightened demand.
