Kuwait Faces Air Quality Challenges Despite Global Improvement

Kuwait: Kuwait’s air quality remains a concern, ranking 11th globally for fine particle (PM2.5) pollution according to a report by IQ Air. This places them fourth-worst in the Arab world, behind Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.

The report, which analyzed 134 countries, revealed a troubling reality: only 7 nations meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for PM2.5 levels. These particles, emitted by vehicles, industry, and other sources, can deeply infiltrate the lungs and pose health risks.

While Kuwait City ranked 13th among polluted capitals globally, concerns persist. The Environment Public Authority (EPA) previously addressed similar reports, emphasizing transparency in their hourly air quality updates. They highlight national air quality standards and that dust concentrations typically fall within acceptable ranges.

The EPA disputes classifications by some platforms like IQ Air, citing mismatched measurement methods and standards. Each nation, they argue, establishes its own regulations based on specific circumstances and geographical location.

This news underscores the ongoing battle against air pollution. While global air quality has generally improved, significant challenges remain in certain regions, including Kuwait. Continued monitoring, transparency, and potentially stricter regulations may be necessary to address these concerns and safeguard public health, reported Al Rai daily.
