Infantino’s remarks were delivered during a meeting with the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) in Asunción, Paraguay. Notably, Paraguay, along with Uruguay and Argentina, is set to co-host the opening matches of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“Combating racism in football demands a united front,” Infantino emphasized. His statement comes amidst a concerning rise in incidents of racial abuse, including those directed towards Real Madrid and Brazil forward Vinicius Junior.
“The suffering endured by Vinicius and other players is unacceptable,” Infantino declared. He stressed the paramount importance of collective action to eradicate all forms of violence and discrimination within the sport.
Infantino’s address builds upon a recent friendly match between Spain and Brazil held in Madrid. The match served as a specific platform to raise awareness about racism. Particularly in light of the repeated abuse faced by Vinicius during his time playing in Spain.
The issue, however, is not limited to isolated occurrences. Players of color across Europe, Brazil, and other regions have been subjected to similar forms of racial harassment in recent months.
