Beat the Ramadan Rush: Sulaibiya Market Offers Abundance at Affordable Prices

Sulaibiya, Kuwait: While some markets witness price surges during Ramadan, the Sulaibiya vegetable and fruit market (Shabra) offers a refreshing alternative. Shoppers are finding a wide variety of fresh produce at reasonable prices, defying Ramadan trends.

A customer reported delightful finds like zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, and more, all available in small boxes for under half a dinar and larger boxes for just one dinar. This stands in stark contrast to the inflated prices observed elsewhere. “I bought 18 boxes of various vegetables and fruits for only KD 24!” exclaimed a satisfied shopper, highlighting the affordability. Another resident echoed this sentiment, praising Shabra as the go-to spot for bulk purchases at sensible prices.

Despite Shabra’s stability, some price increases were noted in other markets. Tomatoes, lemons, lettuce, and potatoes saw minor bumps compared to pre-Ramadan prices. While Shabra offers relief, consumers urge the government to monitor prices across the board. Concerns were raised regarding potential exploitation during Ramadan. Citizens called for measures to ensure affordability and prevent artificial price hikes.

The story differs for sheep prices. The ongoing war in Ukraine and import restrictions are cited as reasons for a 50% increase in local sheep costs. Consumers can expect prices to range from KD140 to KD180 depending on size and breed.

With its abundance of fresh produce and reasonable pricing, the Sulaibiya market stands out as a beacon of affordability during Ramadan. While some price increases are observed elsewhere, Shabra offers a welcome respite for budget-minded shoppers. However, consumer calls for government oversight remain as the holy month progresses.
